Lady Lions Named to All District Basketball Team
by Keegan Farley

After a year of hard work, dedication and history in the making, juniors Tate Moore and Angeleena Young and sophomore Kendra Copp from the Ponder Lady Lions basketball team received First Team All-District Honors in District 13-AA. Those who received Honorable Mention were sophomore Sarah Ream and senior Mychelle Gregg.

The girls who showed skills not just on the court but also off the court academically and received All-District Academic were senior Mychelle Gregg, juniors Angeleena Young and Kori McConnell and sophomores Sarah Ream, Kara Harper and Kendra Copp.

These awards are given to those who are not only the hardest working individuals, but also to those who strive to succeed and support the team. Each person that received this award is put through a strenuous nomination process. Each applicant is first nominated by the coach of the team; then, at a meeting along with other coaches from the district, the players are rewarded the All-District Honors based on a majority vote from the coaches.

These select groups of girls have worked hard to not only take the girls to the playoffs, but have also set examples for the fans that have supported them all season long.

Drama Presents 'The Girl in the Mirror'
by Krissy Boxell

On March 14, the Drama deparment will be performing the one act play, “The Girl in the Mirror,” a play that depicts the life of a girl who attempts to commit suicide but ends up in the hospital. While being cared for, she is visited by a mysterious man, thought to be an angel, who shows her different stages of her life to convince her to choose to live instead of die, once the alarm in the hospital goes off.

The One Act Play members have worked extremely hard to prepare for this presentation on Wednesday, as well as for zone, the first round of their UIL One Act Play competition, at the end of March. The OAP has attended critiquing sessions in Princeton, Grayson and Argyle, and have used their drama class period, as well as time after school, to practice going over the play.

“The Girl in the Mirror” will be presented in the Ponder HS cafeteria at 7 p.m.

Lions Beat Bobcats in District Season Opener
by Katelyn Woods

The Ponder Varsity Baseball Team took on powerhouse Krum to launch district play. The Lions upset Krum 7-1 on Bobcat turf on March 6.

“It felt great to start off district with a win,” senior catcher Clint Crowell said.

Freshman Jeffery Specht was on the hill for the Lions and was a key to the Lions’ victory. He suppressed the hard-hitting Bobcats to only five hits.

“Jeffery pitched outstanding,” Crowell said. “He stepped up big for us.”

For the first 5 innings, neither the Lions nor the Bobcats had managed to put any runs on the board. The Lions then, however, broke it open in the 6 th, scoring 3 runs; the boys then expanded their lead in the 7 th inning scoring 4 runs. The Bobcats made an attempt to comeback in the bottom of the 7 th, starting off the inning with a triple. They could only, however, muster one run.

“It was a great win,” junior shortstop Lane Loiselle said. “We did what we were suppose to, and if we continue to play with that same enthusiasm and intensity, we will keep winning.”

The Lions, currently 3-5 on the year, will continue district play with Anna on March 13 in Anna at 4:00 and then Blue Ridge at home at 7:00 on March 16 continuing their hunt for playoffs.
