After a nail-biting regional tournament in Stephenville, the Ponder Lions are headed to Austin to play in the state finals for the second time in three years. “This is where all of the hard work pays off,” senior Calvin Redfearn said. “We had a taste of state our sophomore year and it made us that much hungrier to go again.” On Friday, Feb. 29, the Lions faced Itasca, previously ranked 6th in the state. Ponder fought through much of the first half and struggled to keep the lead. Sophomore Scott Gregg proved to be a dominant force, ending with 15 of the Lions’ 57 points of the night. At the half, the Ponder had a 6 point lead, 28-22. The Lion-lead increased to 8 points, but Itasca came back late in the third to keep the fans on the edge of their seats. Junior Joel Garza knocked down the three-pointer well into the fourth quarter that would send Ponder to an 11-point victory over Itasca. It was do-or-die on Saturday, March 1 when Ponder went head-to-head with the Edgewood Bulldogs who had defeated the Peaster Greyhounds in a close game the night before. Ponder came out ready to play in the first half and it appeared that the Lions would take an easy landslide win over Edgewood. Junior Jesus Lujan was persistent on defense to keep a hold on the Bulldogs throughout the game. The first half ended with a score of only 18-10. Edgewood came back from the half and turned on the heat. Ponder struggled to keep the lead and ended the third with a score of 25-19. Isaiah Boxell played a strong offensive game, shooting crucial three-pointers and eventually claiming 13 total points against the Bulldogs. Senior Nathan McPherson helped lead the Lions through the intense fourth quarter, which ended with a late three-pointer by Edgewood to send both teams into an extra four-minute period. After various lead-changes, Ponder finally grabbed hold of a three-point advantage (45-42) thanks to free throws by Boxell and quick shots by McPherson. Edgewood had a chance to come back and extend the game into a second overtime but fell short of the Lions. Ponder will advance to the 2A State Tournament in the Erwin Center at the University of Texas in Austin. Their first game will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7 against Arp, who beat Ponder in the state finals in 2006. The winner will go on to play the winner between Jim Ned and New Waverley in the state finals on Saturday. “Ever since the 5th grade when I watched the team win state in 2001, that’s all I’ve wanted to do,” McPherson said, “to live the dream.” |
