Ponder Livestock
Show

by Krissy Boxell

Goats, pigs and cattle were rounded up and moved to the Ponder Agriculture shop where the Ponder FFA Show was taking place on March 4. Various competitions were judged by Richard Meeks who reviewed the livestock throughout the day to determine the winners.

Kicking off the show, goats were the first to be presented. Freshman Chelsea Rogers placed 2nd in the lightweight goat division. In the heavyweight goat class, Michelle Frost showed two goats, with Cassandra Hosack taking her place for one goat, and received 1st and 3rd place, while Kayleigh Lewis received 2nd place. Overall, Rogers was awarded Reserve Champion.

Next was the cattle division, where sophomore Delanie (D.D.) Darnell won 1st place in the heifer class.

Following the cattle were the swine, where freshman Marshall McKenna was awarded 1st place and freshman Parker Brooks won 3rd place in the lightweight Duroc class. In the heavyweight class, sophomore Terrill Yeager took 1st place and Grand Champion overall. McKenna was also awarded Reserve Champion overall.

In the heavyweight Hamp division, freshman Kim Harper was awarded 2nd place in the lightweight class. Sophomore Cheyenne Tawater took 1st place in the heavyweight hamp class and freshman Aaron Esterer took 5th place. In the end, Tawater was named Grand Champion in the Hamp class and was later awarded Reserve Champion of all the swine at the show.

In the lightweight York class, freshman Lacohn Cox was awarded 2nd place. Later, in heavyweight York, freshman Sealy Vardell took 1st place.

Then in lightweight cross-breed, Vardell won 2nd place, while Brooks won 5th place. Junior Seth Reed was awarded 3rd place in the middleweight cross, and junior Dylan Barber won 4th place in the heavyweight cross class.

After all of the livestock excitement, everyone was treated to a free meal consisting of hamburgers with various sides and a wide variety of desserts.

The FFA show in all was a successful preparation for the upcoming county livestock show, where hopefully some of the same Ponder names will be taking home top prizes.

Lions Basketball Season Wrap-up
By Katelyn Woods

The varsity basketball boys ended their season in the Regional Quarterfinals against the powerhouse Rivercrest on Feb. 27. The Rebels edged the Lions 44-39.

The Lions had a triumphant season overall. The boys finished their season with an impressive overall record of 30-6 and a flawless district record of 14-0, which earned them the title of District Champions. They also won both the Ponder and Dublin Tournaments and placed 5 th at the Whataburger Tournament.

The boys racked up the awards when the All-District teams were named last week. Every Lion received at least one honor. Junior Nathan McPherson was named MVP of the district; sophomore Jesus Lujan was named Defensive Player of the Year and Academic All-District; senior William Stanton, Offensive Player of the Year; sophomore Isaiah Boxell, Newcomer of the Year; junior Calvin Redfearn, 1 st Team All-District; and named Honorable Mention All-District were senior Scott Lambert and sophomores Joel Garza and Terrill Yeager, who was also named Academic All-District.

With only graduating two seniors and lots of young talent remaining, the varsity Lions and their fans have a lot to look forward to in the seasons to come.

Softball Wins 1st District Game
by Lindsey Allen

On Mar. 2, the varsity girls’ softball team had their first district game of the season against Farmersville and was victorious with a smooth-sailing 7-1 win.

The night started off right, when the Lady Lions gained two runs in the first inning. The score continued to increase throughout the game, and the girls only allowed the Lady Farmers one run, which was scored during the 3 rd inning.

Senior Wanda Malone, who has already signed with Louisiana Tech, pitched the entire game and contributed to the victory with numerous strike-outs.

“It’s nice to start district off with a ‘W’,” sophomore, second baseman, Keeley Woods said.

Tonight, the PHS girls will compete against Leonard at 4:30 in Ponder. And on Mar. 8, the Bowie Tournament will begin with three games. The following morning, Ponder will play another game in Bowie before playing an evening game in Krum, against Krum, separate from the tournament. On Mar. 10, the team will travel to Bowie one more time to conclude the tournament.

Much can be expected from the Lady Lions this season, due to their record thus far. The team has only lost one game, against Sanger, and plans to keep adding up the W’s.
