Ponder Cowboys Dominate DCLA Rodeo
by Lindsey Allen

On March 21, the Denton County Livestock Association Youth Rodeo took place at the North Texas State Fairgrounds. Senior Clint Crowell took the top honor of All-Around Cowboy after placing in three events. Crowell placed first in ribbon roping and second, along with partner Tyler Ashman, in team roping. Crowell also contributed to Ponder’s calf roping victories; freshman Taylor Stout received first in this competition, Crowell placed second and junior Lane Loiselle’s skills earned him third.

“I was happy that Ponder kids swept calf roping,” Crowell said.

And both Stout, who came in third in senior breakaway roping, and Loiselle, who placed second in chute dogging, along with the rest of the team, were able to succeed and sweep other rodeo events, despite the mud.

“It was a fun experience because of the weather,” said Loiselle, referring to the rainy condition, “and also because Ponder did so well.”

Prior to the awards ceremony, Vardell had taken first place in both the beauty contest and ticket sale contest amongst the other nominees. At the end of the day, Vardell was crowned Rodeo Queen, out of nine other girls, to represent Ponder FFA.

In breeding goats, Sophomore Cole Spann took first place in his class. Later, he was named Reserve Grand Champion and brought in money and a buckle. Senior Michelle Frost took first in Class 3 kids. Freshman Chelsea Rogers was awarded third place in Class 5 aged goats.

Also representing Ponder, Junior Corey Denning was named Champion OPB in Market Swine. Sophomore Cheyenne Tawater received second place in her class, showing a Hamp pig.

In the rabbit show, Sophomore Travis Watson was awarded Senior Showmanship and Senior Judging overall.

Other Ponder FFA students participating in the show were freshmen Parker Brooks, Kim Harper, Lacohn Cox and Marshall McKenna; sophomores Cheyenne Tawater, Delanie Darnell and Terrill Yeager; juniors Seth Reed and Ryan Lyles and senior Kayleigh Lewis.
