Play Radio Play! Texas
By Ashley Laughlin
Originally from Aledo, Texas, Daniel Hunter has finally released his full length album, TEXAS. The (formerly) one-man project titled, PlayRadioPlay! is gaining popularity in the pop-punk/electronica scenes.
After completing last years Warped Tour and later touring with big names such as Fall Out Boy and Gym Class Heroes, Dan, as he is known to fans, jokingly says his sound is “Texas Straight-Edge Softcore”. Tired of straight-edge hardcore crowding air waves, he uses gentle beats and quirky lyrics to make light-hearted music that seems silly, but holds deep meaning.
He says he named the album TEXAS for the love of the state. “I assumed somebody had named their album ‘ Texas’ before, but no one had,” Hunter said. “I had to do it before someone else did!”
Signed with major label Island, the album definitely lives up to all of the anticipation. From the song titles, that display Hunters eccentric sense of humor, are misleading of the real emotion he conveys in the actual tracks. The first single, “Madi Don’t Leave” was written for his girlfriend and the difficulty of her moving away for college.
The opening track, “Loco Commotion” starts the disk slowly then draws you into the repetition and dynamics that string the songs along into one beat driven, soft sounding, set of rhythms. Slight diversities like the almost acoustic sound of “Tooth Decay” to the chorus humming in the background of “Pirate and Princess” really give the music character and you can feel from the lyrics that the songs have more personal meaning to Hunter than fans will ever comprehend.
With a sound somewhat like Metro Station, Hellogoodbye, or The Postal Service, this happy music is well worth taking a listen. |
