Roar Staff Meets Journalist
By Keegan Farley
September 17, 2007

Friday was a fun-filled, yet educational field trip for the Roar newspaper staff. The day included an interview with a journalist, a restaurant review lesson and assignment and a movie review lesson and assignment.

It all started at the Sweetwater Grill in Denton. There, they were greeted by one of the Denton Record Chronicle’s sports writers, Jeff Andrews. Andrews is the writer for the Denton Ryan Notebook and has written many articles covering Ponder sports, including the playoff games last year.

“I thought he was very interesting and it was neat to finally meet the face behind the articles we read,” said staff writer Ashley Laughlin.

The newspaper staff interviewed Andrews as they ate. He shared insight into what it takes to be a journalist. Entertaining stories about running from press box to field for interviews, meeting deadlines, dealing with angry fans and coaches and covering favorite sports teams filled the lunch hour. Once lunch was finished, the students recorded their thoughts on the service and taste of the Sweetwater Grill for the upcoming issue of the Ponder High Monthly Roar.

The staff then headed off to the Cinemark movie theatre to watch Mr. Woodcock, where they learned what it takes to write a movie review. The review of Mr. Woodcock will be published in the Ponder High Monthly Roar this Friday.

“I enjoyed getting to know the staff better and enjoyed hearing the many stories Jeff Andrews had to share,” said staff member Kristen Kimmel.
