Lions Reach End of the Road
By Robert Davenport
November 10, 2009

The Ponder Lions ended their season Saturday morning at Vandergriff Park, located in Arlington. This was the regional meet; it had 24 teams and 172 runners competing for a chance to go to state. Although unable to meet their goals, the Lions did compete well and finished 6th overall.

“I’m never satisfied with any teams I coach unless we go all the way. That’s just how high I set my goals,” Coach Steve Young said.” But I am very pleased with the way our team ran and the effort they put in.”

It was the last meet for three members of the varsity team, seniors Alex Huerta, Kaleb Broadstreet, and Colton Evans. This will leave four members, Jorden Young, Robert Davenport, Coleman Chance, and Daniel Huerta left for next year and three others that are willing to take their place.

"I can’t say that I’m going to miss it, but I also can’t say that I regret doing it,” Alex Huerta said.

Having led the team for the majority of the year, Young finished 18th at regional, followed by A. Huerta 23rd, Davenport 34th, Broadstreet 53rd, Chance 89th, Evans 117th, and D. Huerta 137th.

"I’ve been involved with our high school cross country teams for the past ten years and we’ve had more talented individual runners and deeper teams that made it to state before, but we’ve never had a better team. These guys worked extremely hard, pushed each other to get better, and stuck together through adversity when it counted. I am very proud of each and every one of them. They are the hardest working team we’ve ever had,” Young said.
